Emergency Shelters
|
*I called the Texas Governor's Office, Texas Operations Center, Texas 2-1-1 Information, and Texas Emergency Response
and none of them could provide me instructions on how to direct someone to a shelter in Texas. As far as I could divine, Texas operates "Shelter Hubs"
which you can reach through the 2-1-1- information service that will assign you to a shelter. At least, that's what the most intelligent
of the four people I spoke to thought, though they weren't sure.
The least impressive was the woman who said when I asked for a contact number for people seeking emergency shelter, "Oh, I don't think we
would want to do that." Let me know if you get something better.

Emergency Food
TIP: If possible, bring along all prescription medicine bottles with you when you evacuate. Many states allow out-of-state pharmacies to
refill medications, with some exceptions, during a disaster. Contact the Red Cross or your local Emergency Management Agency
to find out more.
Pet Shelters in a Disaster
After Hurricane Katrina states were required to re-examine their readiness to evacuate and shelter pets during
an emergency. Most pet shelters require a crate and a leash. You should also have food, water, and medicines for your
pet in your emergency kit. It is also helpful if you bring vaccination records, water bowls, and plastic bags.
